Welcome to the realm of PCTech! I have been collecting useful tips and troubleshooting procedures over the years for problems that will not be solved over the phone by your ISP or PC manufacturer. The articles that I'll publish under this domain will branch off in many diferent directions, so i'll try to keep the tree of links simple to the point where you'll be able to find whatever you are looking for. Flicking through your posts, I can see that most of you are going through financial difficulties of some sort. Many people say that they need money but somehow they seem to expect a miracle – someone to give them what they need just because they are nice. It sounds wonderful but it doesn’t happen very often, as we all know. In most cases everyone must sort out the problems himself.  I am sure you are doing your best trying to find a grant, if possible, or get social security benefits, which is not always easy, but there are other options too. I am a loan officer myself and I would be happy to help you with some free advice. It might help you out or at least I might be able to give you useful information.

As a general rule, if you are in too much debt, bankruptcy might be a good way out. (But don’t do it if you don’t HAVE to!)  It doesn’t do as much harm as most people believe in a long term and it is a way of getting back on track faster. What would you say if I told you that a person who had bankruptcy discharged 3 months ago has a credit score of 566? Or that there are programs that would give you  100% mortgage loan one day out of bankruptcy. Please don’t get me wrong! I am not trying to convince you that bankruptcy is a good think. I would compare it to having a surgery – you don’t do it if you have another option.
Just a piece of advice: do your homework first. I have seen lawyers who would easily charge you a few thousand dollars and do just about nothing.

Another sensitive issue is credit history and credit scores. Many people believe that their scores are too low to get a loan. In reality, there are programs for almost every situation. Keep in mind that you CAN and HAVE TO: (1) make sure your credit report is correct at all times and (2) sometimes there are errors in the report and you need to take steps fix them. There are thinks you can do that will improve your credit scores and the good news is - you can do it yourself. You don’t have to pay someone $3,000 or more for a “magic” credit history repair.

Well this is where my mind goes blank. I really don't know how to exlain myself.

I am 18 and live in a small town in Nevada. I go to school at the local community college and have a poor paying job that I love because of the people i work with.
I have a wonderful boyfriend and a few really close friends.
I spend most of my time either at work or school. The rest I spend with friends at a local 24 hour restaurant or wal-mart.. yes its a very small town.

I lost my dad three years ago, as of  October 22. I really have few people who really feel comfortable listening to me when I really miss him. And I don't think anyone truly understands my situation due to the fact that my dad and my relationship was complicated. That is because he had Muscular Dystrufy and didnt like to get very close to people, in fear that if he died it would be too hard on them. I in turn do not like to put my problems on other people fearing that they have too much to deal with already in their lives.

And yeah.. thats about it all for now.

Here is how to set up your e-mail address,  how to change how often OLE sends and receives messages and how to enable the viewing of pictures in Outlook Express 5.0 and 6.0:

     In general none of the ISP providers are obligated to help you with this - if you can open a web page, that is as far as their tech support will go. Your PC manufacturer will NOT help you with this issue. And your last resort - Microsoft, will charge you for live tech support approximately $35/h... So, to avoid hours of arguing with tech support reps, here is what you have to do to fix this type of problem:

    DELETE THE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES To delete the temporary Internet files, follow these steps:

    CONFIGURE SECURITY, CONTENT, AND ADVANCED SETTINGS IN INTERNET EXPLORER To configure security, content, and advanced settings in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

To delete the Cookies in IE 6.0:

• click on "Tools" and select "Internet Options"

• Click on "Delete Cookies":

• Click "OK":

• After the hourglas is gone, click on "Delete Files":

• Click "OK" without checking the box next to "Delete all offline content":

• After the hourglass is gone, click on "Delete Files" again :

• Put a check mark next to "Delete all offline content" and click "OK":

• After the hour glass is gone from your screen, click "OK" on the "Internet Options" window, close IE and reboot your computer.

Before you are able to do this you will have to obtain the following information:

•  Your e-mail address
•  Your user name
•  Your password
•  The incoming server name
•  The outgoing server name

After you get the above information here is what do you have to do:

• Open Outlook Express
• Click on "tools" and click on "Accounts"

• Click on the "Mail" tab

• Click on the "Add" button and click on "Mail"

• In the "Display name" box type whatever you want people to see when they recieve an e-mail from you and click "Next".

• In the "E-mail address" box type your complete e-mail address and click "Next".

• Enter the incoming and outgoing mail server names and enter them in the text boxes. Click "Next".

• Enter your password in the text box next to "Password" and make sure that there is a check mark next to "Remember password". Click "Next".

• Click "Finish".

• Click "Close".

After you click "Close", you should be able to click on "Send/Recieve" button on the tool bar of OLE and get the messages that are stored on the incoming mail server.

Here is how to do this, explained in simple words:
 
    1. Click on the “Start” button on your desktop.

    2. Click on the “Run” option in the “Start” menu.

    3. In the text box next to “Open” type “cmd” (for Win XP or Win 2000 Pro), or “command” (for Win 95, Win 98, Win ME, Win NT 4.0).

    4. Press “Enter” or click “OK”.

    5. The “command prompt” window will open on the screen.

    6. In this window type “telnet ‘YourIncomingServer’* 110”.

    7. Press “Enter”

    8. You should get “+OK InterMail POP3 server ready.” or a similar message.

    9. You will have to type word “user”, press the space bar on the keyboard one time and type your “user name”**

    10. Press “Enter”

    11. You should get “+OK please send PASS command”.

    12. Now type the word “pass”, press the space bar on the keyboard one time and type your “password”***

    13. You will get “+OK ‘user name’ is welcome here”. Now you are logged on to your POP3 server through telnet.
    Now you should be able to type "list" in the same window. This will display the number of the messages in your mailbox and their individual size.
 
      * - ‘YourIncomingServer’ - the name of your incoming mail server will be provided to you by your Internet Service Provider. For example - if you are a customer of Cox Communications your incoming mail sever could be ' pop.west.cox.net '; if you are a customer of Earthlink, you mail server could be ' pop.earthlink.net'. To obtain the correct name of your incoming mail server, please call your ISP's technical support line.

To make sure that your Internet Explorer is not trying to use dial up connection:

1. open up IE
2. click on "Tools" button in the tool bar in the upper left-hand side of Internet Explorer
3. select "Options" from the menu that opens up
4. click on the "Connections" tab of the "Internet Options" window
5. put a "dot" in the radio button next to "Never dial a connection"
6. click "Apply"
7. click "OK"
8. close Internet Explorer
9. restart your computer

Now try using your explorer again - this time it should use your existing LAN connection.

Some of the security settings in OLE have to be changed.

Here is how to do this:

• open OLE
• click on "Tools" button in the upper part of OLE
• select "Options" from the drop down menu
• go to the "Security" tab
• remove the check mark from "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus"
• click the "OK" button
• close OLE
• open OLE

Now you should be able to open pictures and attachments.

I am a mother of two, 2years old and 14months.  My 14 moth girl is under going genetic testing, orthopedic surgery and therapy.  Due to all of her many doctors appointments including those in california I had to stop working my full time job last November to keep up with all appointments.  My boyfriend and father to my two children has continued to worked a full time.  We were just able to make ends meet for the last few months, but this month we are now so far beneth water we can bearly breath.  We moved into the home we are in in August 2006 we have not been able to funish our home yet, we managed to purchase a couch, but no table to eat at, my boyfriend and I are sleeping on an air mattress that we have to re-air half way through the night because it doesn't hold air and my son sleeps on a mattress and my daughter sleeps in a playyard we found at a thrift store.  We don't have any family members that have extra money to help us out in our situation.  So I have been forced to turn to the kindness of strangers to help us out.  My boyfriend has too much pride to ask for help so I have left him in the dark about this and my asking strangers for help.  I'm not asking for a particular amount of money just what ever you can give.  If a dollar is all you can afford then please help us out it wold be greatly appreciated.  I know there are people out there who would like to help but are uncomfortable with sending money, if that is the case a gift card for Walmart would help out alot so we can get food and diapers for the kids.  Since this is the only place we can get food and things the children need all at the sametime.

To change how often Outlook Express checks or sends messages you have to:

1. open OLE
2. click on the "Tools" button on the tool bar on top of Outlook Express
3. in the "General" tab of the "Options" window by default there is a check mark next to "Check for new messages every 30 minute(s)"
4. you can change the number "30" to whatever number you want - if you delete "30" and type "5" in the box, your Outlook Express will send and check for new messages every 5 minutes.

I was paralyzed from the chest down in 1996, auto. Accident. It was while doing a mileage check to bid a job for Nye County. It was also on my own time, I really wanted to get the contract, as it would mean more income from the company I worked for. Vortex, was a great company, their profit share and performance bonus programs made it possible for all employees to make extra, with a way that no other company could match. I would get paid a monthly check on top of my hourly pay for whatever extra contract's or (PM, Preventive Maintenance) jobs I sold.

My main job was installing, repairing and doing P.M. on any chain accounts we had on a daily basis, and our most profitable work was in installing RSD's. Rolling steel doors, and sectional doors, as well as every other kind of door and hardware you can imagine. My company was becoming a nation wide business very fast while I was there. Our shop was located in Las Vegas, NV, each man was basically his own boss, we each had separate trucks stocked with all the power tools, mig and stick welding units, compressors for air tools, (Pneumatic) for those of us in the construction field, ladders, nail guns, impact wrench, with all the fittings + all the tools needed for working on glass doors, fire doors. Just one month before my accident, we had installed the biggest rolling steel door in the US, at the Flamingo Hilton, I guess I am going on and on sorry, but I really loved my job! Anyway after my accident they kept me in the hospital for six weeks, then four more months in rehab. I was in pretty bad shape, I could not even use my arms or hands, when I was realized, what had happened it was a big shock I kind of lost my mind for a few days after that my mom said I was talking to my dead grandfather like he was standing right next to me. I actually told my mom he was standing right next to her and trying to talk to her but she was not listening, she freaked out and ran out of my hospital room, I also according to my wife kept asking for my tools saying the door to my room needed to be fixed and why could she not simply bring them so I could fix it. Of coarse I cannot remember any of that but I beleive them, only because it was in my doctors report and he also told my some other crazy things I did, he said it was normal. That when the mind cannot handle the shock of what happened to the body it causes all kinds of different behavioral gliches to cope with the pain. Once I finally got out and went back home and tried to get back to some kind of normality, I started looking for a job even though I could not use my hands I figured the only way I was going to get back some use of my limbs was by using them! And one month later I had a job! It was putting tested by stickers on circuit boards and, (LED's) used in neon signs on the strip, menial but it really helped my regain function in my hands, well one hand anyway. My left hand had too much nerve damage, but hey I am right handed so at least I could still sign my name. Fast forward five years I had been injured again in a fall in a public rest room; I was doing a transfer into my chair when the grab bar broke out of the wall! It was only mounted with four 3/4 inch screws drilled into tile, which was only glued into the drywall! So it put me out of working anywhere but home.

So here we are, it’s 2002, my wheelchair lift transmission and suspension in my $54,000
wheelchair accessible truck needs to be replaced. I cannot work and my disability checks from Social Security barely pay the utilities, in fact it really does not! Since I was only thirty two at the time of my accident, I had not accumulated enough to pay me much of anything. So now after I was no longer able to work, due to my new injury and still had a $574.00 payment on a vehicle that was UN -driveable, plus a sixteen hundred a month mortgage. It was getting pretty bad, not only did we loose my income but we had our home and children to worry about But we managed to keep our home long enough too sell it without falling behind on our mortgage payment... That is until my truck’s cost to repair bill, was estimated at close to eighteen thousand dollars and change! So we had a choice to make, since my one year warrantee was up, you herd me right one year! For a vehicle that cost as much a hummer, and only had, 31,426 mile’s on it, and it was a limited warranty on top of that! Our choices were keep the truck and hope somehow to get financing to fix it, only because it would have cost much more to try and sell it and get a new one. So, we tried everything we new to come up with the money to pay for the repairs, but we could not. Now it seemed the only way to fix it and keep up with our payments was to sell our house. You must understand how hard this was, it was our first home and we only had it six months before my accident, and had been married five years.

We had really just started our lives as first time homeowners, at the time of my injury. So it was very hard on our family, but we kept our home for all of this time without ever missing a payment. That in itself was a hard and stressful, but we were so proud that even after becoming paralyzed from the chest down, I and my beautiful wife managed that and had twins! But this time we really had no other way than to sell the house for the funds to repair the truck.

Now, I am going to come right out and say it, right now we need help! My wheelchair lifts is broken again, and guess what the warranty is expired on my new two year old transmission and fifty six hundred dollar suspension is just fine. But we live in a rural area, so it is very important that I have transportation, to and from doctor’s appointments and also in case something happens again to me! Because of my injury, I have had to take really scary amounts of pain meds. On top of antidepressants, spasm, nerve pain drugs, I am not in the best of health; the worst thing for me to deal with is my seven year old twin boys, Camron and Dylon seeing their dad taken away in an ambulance. Dylon is already afraid dad will not come back, both of their grandparents, my wife’s mom and dad,which were my adopted mom and dad, that I loved very much both passed away in 2005.

Leaving them with only one grandparent my mom, but she lives so far away that they barely even see her other than of holidays. Now every time I get sick Dylon who spent a lot of time visiting mom and dad at the nursing home, and also in their condo before moms stroke, Camron was also their at the same time he is just not as much of a worrier as Dylon. Anyway, it has been hard we all have gone through a lot of pain and loss in the past year and a half, my mom is still here, but I know it because I was lucky enough to grow up with my grandfather always around, that the boys really miss him. Just FYI. My father left us when I was five, so I never really new him, my mom says I am better off.

But every boy and girl needs their parents whether it’s together or not, they need to be their when we need to rely on them. I hope you look at the picture up there that’s my life right their, my twin sons and more recently, in June of 05, my twin boy and girl Zackary, and Delainie. It is both for me and them I am asking for financial help to fix my wheelchair lift. For me because I cannot take my boys to a movie or just to burger king for that matter. But most of all it is for them, so dad can pick them up from school or go to church with them again. They both just finished their first year of catechism; I can’t wait to see them as alter boys. I am 26 years old and a first time mother of the most beautiful 1 year old little boy. He has made me look at life in a completley different light. But being a parent isn't as easy as i always thought my parents had it. The father of my son has turned out to be, well, i guess not ready to be a father. So i'm on my own pretty much. A woman trying to raise a man. Now to top it all off,  I'm 7 months pregnant. I have been blessed to have a supportive family, but family or not a person can only help you until they can't help you anymore. my father is going to reno to start a new job and he cant afford to take me with him nor would I want to just pick up and go. So either I have to come up with the funds to move to an apartment, or I have to come up with a way to pay for half the bills in this house.(My dad's gonna leave everything on if I end up staying here.) A friend of mine said they'd move in and pay half of the bills if I could come up with the rest. I have been looking for work that I can do on the computer. Somthing I can do at home. I don't know what to do. half the bills here would be like $650. It would be more expensive to move into an apartment.  Everywhere that I have called wants !st and last months rent plus a deposit. I can not come up with that kind of money. But I'm hopeful and I refuse to give up. So if there's anyone out there who can help, Any help I can get I'm grateful to receive. Thank you, and God bless.

 I don't know just what to say for I have never done anything like this before, I will spare all who read this my long draw out sad story of surcumstace that leads me to the position of reaching out for help from others. I would like to attend UNLV for a Buisness degree and can't (I don't like the word can't it's like failure before you tried everything) so let's say I'm having trouble finding a way to get my dream started. this will require some help with tuition and books a computer most classes in my field of study suggest a laptop well I realy don't know what else to say. I would love to introduce myself, as Stanley Harris, I came here to educate and aid in any possible way. I to need a bit of assistance. I have been blessed by God to conjure up a new invention for the world to see. For the world to embrace. we as humans we've all  encountered all sorts of situations. God knows I've had my share of problems. I was born paralayzed and I couldn't walk for thirteen years, nor could I play with the boys and girls in my neighborhood. Life was very hard for me. I know some of you have experienced some unfortunate situations as well, but if you are like me we don't allow situations to get us down. We keep going. I have to divulge to you all that I was homeless for eight months, I won't get into the gruesome story, but I will state that it isn't easy endeavoring to do good and everything you do isn't appreciated.  I've stated some of these things just to let you know the sort of person you are learning and or taking the time out to read about.  Do feel free to address me by way of email if you have any questions for me.  Remember, the greater joys in life are more felt than seen.

My husband and I have been looking for work for over 6 months now. I prepared taxes during the tax season and was given a bonus at the end of the season that kept us alive for another month or two. But we have tapped out all our credit cards and borrowed as much from family and friends as we can. We have also sold a bunch of our stuff on ebay. 

Please understand, we have not just looked for work; we've also looked for ways to make money via side businesses. We are determined to make a sustainable living, but we have encountered some roadblocks on the way. Within a two year period, we were robbed of most of our belongings and we had a business deal go sour that left us homeless for a short period of time and cost us a lot of time and money in legal struggles.

I've made a small amount of money in the past year editing books, articles and papers. I find that I especially like book editing and have a small website up right now that has attracted some clients and potential clients.  I've not done any marketing to date, other than establishing a relationship with one self-publishing company and putting up a website on another editing service. Today, I just discovered a place where I can advertise my services for free to over a million people a month worldwide. I only need to win a few clients in order to make ends meet. I wish I had discovered this website six months ago because I could have been promoting my side business and making money by now. But I believe things happen in their own time.

Here is my dilemma. I think that a couple of months of setting up a better website, setting up a storefront on the above mentioned website and promoting my services both locally and in cyberspace will lead to enough work to make ends meet and dig us out of the hole. If I can make a living at this, I believe my husband's business will be able to grow and we will have a good long-term outlook.

But the short-term is grim. We have about $100 left and we are now behind on bills. In nine days we will need to have about $900 to cover bills, including rent, but not including food or gasoline. Fifteen days after that we will need another $700 plus food & gasoline. We really need about $1900 a month in order to meet our obligations, which for two people isn't a lot. We will need more than that eventually to dig ourselves out of the hole, but right now I'm just concerned to survive until something gives.

I'm looking for help in the short-short term -- help to make it through August's rent. Appoximately $2000-$3000.

There are several ways that could happen:

1. We've been trying to sell our 1993 van, but with little success. We've advertised in local paper and auto trader and free classifieds.  With a couple of repairs, we actually could auction it locally. That would mean an investment that we do not have plus, according to the auctions website, up to 8 weeks before the auction would yeild payment. The auction house sets a reserve. If someone could lend me the amount of the reserve less the auction fees, I would pay that back when the van sells. Of course, if some other windfall occurred, I would be happy to pay back sooner. 
   
2. If you like to buy the van, we can talk about that as well. I live in Nevada and am willing to drive the van to California, Arizona or Utah to deliver it to someone. Otherwise, we could discuss shipping.
   
3. Maybe someone out there has a book, a manual, a dissertation, or some other editing project(s) that I could complete over the summer. I'd be willing to discount my prices considerably in order to have short-term money.
   
4. I have considerable experience as a bookkeeper, especially setting up books on computer or setting up new business books. If you have such a project, I'd be happy to talk with you about rates.
   
5. Maybe someone would like to talk to me about investing in my business. I plan to specialize in helping businesses or entrepreneurs self-publish a book or books to enhance their reputations and market shares. I'd be happy to share my business plan with anyone who'd consider microinvesting in my business.

I am open to any ideas on what to do. My husband and I have survived some bad blows in the last couple of  years as a result of setting some boundaries with family and business relationships. We are going to make it. I believe in us, but I also believe in the power of community and I was happy to find this site.

In addition to paying back a loan or providing the best service I know how to someone who might help, I also pledge to "pay it forward." I am strong believer in the power of human interaction and human networking. I won't drop the ball.

I was recently involved in 2 car accidents, both of which were not my fault, leaving me with 5 herniated buldging disks located in y c-spine/neck. Ive been in pain since Sept '06, my first accident, and i go through each day with massive amounts of pain, numbness, and migraines.I am a single mother of two. I applied for disability 7 months ago..no answer yet due to an error on thier side as they admitted....So i had to move in with my mother...that alone already says it! But she has a very verbally abusive boyfriend, and he has no respect for my kids. As far as cursing, screaming, calling me horrible names, INFRONT OF MY KIDS, it got so far that he said i should put a gun to my head and pull the trigger because im useless. Well, screw him, IM TRYING SO HARD TO FIND OUT WHAT PEOPLE DO WHEN THEY GET IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND IT LEAVES THEM UNABLE TO MOVE, COPE, BE HAPPY(BECAUSE IM ALWAYS IN PAIN) , AND WHERE CAN SOMEONE IN MY SITUATION FIND A HOME FOR ME N MY CHILDREN LIKE I HAD BEFORE I GOT HIT BY TWO IDIOTS THAT CANT DRIVE? THIS ISNT MY FAULT, SO WHY AM I HAVING TO SUFFER? yea i have a lawsuit going, but who knows when ill get that because i need surgery....PLEASE HELP?      thank you.

 I don't know just what to say for I have never done anything like this before, I will spare all who read this my long draw out sad story of surcumstace that leads me to the position of reaching out for help from others. I would like to attend UNLV for a Buisness dagree and can't (I don't like the word can't it's like failure before you tried everything) so let's say I'm having trouble finding a way to get my dream started. this will require some help with tuition and books a computer most classes in my field of study suggest a laptop well I realy don't know what else to say. I appreciate those who have taken the time to read this and would like to thank all those who may have suggestions

i recently left my husband of 11 years. my children as well as myself were victims of domestic violence. but what really pushed me to leave after so long was worse than i ever could have imagined. i found out that my husband was molesting my 10 year old daughter for at least 2 years. it all started when i got deployed to iraq, in february 2003. my daughter was only 6 years old. i am in the worst spot financially due to leaving him. we owned a house together in california, so there was no rent to pay. i am employed now, but most of my earnings have to go to childcare for my 2 year old daughter. we just got our own place after being homeless for over 1 year. we take public transportation when we can afford it, and i walk 4 miles a day (to and from work) 6 days a week. but for once in over 11 years, i can finally say that we are not only alive and together, but that we are safe. there are no local organizations in my area that can help me financially. any help would be a blessing. both of my girls need clothes and shoes. we have no beds, no furnature, no pots or pans. we have been living off of my daily tips just to eat. on a good day, i have made up to $17 dollars, but usually i only get about 4 or 5 dollars. i can be reached by e-mail @ wispies72@yahoo.com. please god send me an angel......
