Shangla is land of natural beauty, long green trees, high mountains, sweet springs, thick forest and streams, was earlier sub-division of Swat District. In 1995 after long movement and endeavors of its people the then Chief Minister of NWFP Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao upgraded it to the status of a District. According census of 1998 its population was 434563 which are 2.5% of the total population of the NWFP, while its current population is 541000. Here annual growth rate is 3.27% and population density is 274 persons per Sq-Km. The number of total households is 53529 and average household size is 8 persons per family. The literacy rate is 14.7% (25.2% in male & 3.7% in female).  Total area of the District is 1586 sq-Km (339614 Acres) in which 104672 Acres (31%) is cultivated and 109685 Acres (32 %) is forest. There are two Tehsils i-e Tehsil Alpuri and Puran with 44 Patwar Circles and 111 villages. The District comprises of 1 National, 2 Provincial Assembly Seats, 2 Tehsil Councils and 28 Union Councils.      .

 Recent devastating earth quake badly affected almost whole population of the District in one or other shape. This natural disaster took about thousands human lives, seriously injured many more persons. The Thousands of kacha & pacca houses are completely demolished, while others are partially damaged which are not fit for further use as these are dangerous and life risk is involved in their further use.

Similarly last year loses of human lives and houses due to heavy snow fall and avalanches are not concealed from any one. Now thousands of earth quake affected are laying helpless under open sky in this severe cold winter weather. 

Ratio of government employers is 5.6%, while majority of its peoples are employed in coal mines through out the country and there standard of living is very below. The main source of income of population is agriculture. The inhabitants of the district are deprived of the infrastructure.

AS it is the most backward District of NWFP Pakistan, any one can estimate living standard of its inhabitants from a report recently issued by the government in which this district was on top in ratio of poverty through out NWFP.
Keeping in view low standard of living of its people lack of infrastructure severe cold winter separate geography and damages of devastating earth quake the people of Shangla District demands positive attention  and measurements of government and  NGOs for its sustainable development, reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Damages of Earthquake and People of Shangla NWFP Pakistan

It was morning of October 8, 2005 when a powerful and devastating earthquake struck the northern part of Pakistan causing major destruction and playing havoc with millions of lives. The affected areas were the Shangla, Mansehra, Bata gram, Kohistan, Abbotabad districts and four districts of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. More than 70,000 people lost their lives out of those 35,000 were children who were attending schools at that time. Most of the civil society infrastructure such as schools, colleges, roads, and hospitals were collapsed and destroyed. The Thousands of Kacha & Pacca dwelling houses are completely demolished, while others are partially damaged which are not fit for further use as these are dangerous and life risk is involved in their further use.
 
The remote district of Shangla consists of scattered populations 554818 divided into tiny, mountain-top hamlets spread out across a vast area. Due the nature of this difficult terrain some areas are difficult to access by road. The number of total households is 53529 and average household size is 8 persons per family. The population density is 341 persons per square kilometer. Total area of the District is 1586 sq-Km (339614 Acres) in which 104672 Acres (31%) is cultivated and 109685 Acres (32 %) is forest. It consists of 2 Tehsils i-e Tehsil Alpuri and Puran with 44 Patwar Circles and 111 villages. The District comprises of 1 National, 2 Provincial Assembly Seats, 2 Tehsil Councils and 28 Union Councils. .
Shangla is a backward and tribal society where majority of the people live below the poverty line and are illiterate. Any one can estimate living standard of its people from a report recently issued by the government in which Shangla district was on top in ratio of poverty through out NWFP.
The literacy rate is 14.7% (25.2% in male & 3.7% in female). The government has so far been a big disappointment in changing the socio-economic conditions of the people and in this advanced technological age of the 21st century we are still lacking the basic infrastructure of the basic necessities of life.
District Shangla is full of natural resources like emerald, Marble, Chromites, Soap stone etc and there is a vast scope of investment and development. Similarly the area has a variety of fauna and flora like Markhur, Brown Bear, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Wolf, Pigeons, Monkeys, Chakor, and Dove etc. In flora medicinal plants like Banafsha, Tarkha, Unab, Mushkibala, white Rose and Mint etc are found in the area which are of great importance.

The people of Shangla are known as being proudly independent and surviving for centuries in mountains. They occupy small stretches of agricultural land and accustomed to living on its produce while many people works in coal mines of Baluchistan, Sind and Punjab. The Ratio of government employers is 5.6%.

This natural disaster took about thousands human lives, seriously injured many more persons. The climate in the region is cold with patches of moderate weather in summers. The inhabitants of Shangla district are lying under open sky in this cold severe weather on mercy of God. The worst affected areas in Shangla district are union councils Shahpur, Damori, Pirkhana, Koozkana, Maira, Shang, Dandai, Kormang, and Sarkool.

. While keeping in mind agonies of the earth quake victims their first immediate requirement is CGI sheets and cements for reconstruction of their houses.
Secondly they required health facilities i-e MCH centers/Hospitals, Free medicines
Thirdly they need vocational training centers and professional skill for their sustainable development.
There fore I request the world community that Keeping in view low standard of living of its people lack of infrastructure severe cold winter separate geography and damages of devastating earth quake the people of Shangla District Shangla donate generously for reconstruction of educational institutes, health centers, vocational centers, streets, roads and other facilities in the earthquake affected areas of Shangla district on humanitarian basis, Because it require immediate attention for its sustainable development, reconstruction and rehabilitation.

WATER SUPPLY SCHEME KASS AND ASHAROO. The organization has executed a drinking water supply scheme for 360 beneficiaries of village Kass and Asharoo Lilownai District Shangla. The scheme has been assisted by strengthening participatory organization (SPO) Peshawar founded by European Union. 3. DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND RELIEF. Earthquake relief On October 8, 2005 Shangla District was badly effected by the sever earthquake more than 700 peoples were killed and above 1500 were injured in disaster. The RCC conducted assessment and provided frequent relief to the victims in shape of cash, tents, mates and food items. 4. AGREEMENT WITH UNICEF. Rural Community Council reached an agreement with UNICEF for Implementation of Shangla Earthquake response and relief Project. It was agreed upon those 4000 families and especially Children’s would receive the relief Package of Unicef through its Partner Rural Community Council. Team of Volunteers would Visit the effected Areas and identify the beneficiaries for the Receipt of the relief Package. The relief package included 1 Blanket & 1 winterize kit. 5. My name is Saba Williams, Im from Pakistan. I lost my father and i have only my mother with me. My father's dead creates a disaster in our life. I have three siblings. when my father died we were all studying. My mother struggled alot to let us complete our studies. When i complete my studies i start one job and still my siblings were studying.

With much depression and effort my mother becomes the patient and we need the medication for her. so i took loans and made credit cards. Now am so stuck in credit cards that I didn’t know the way of coming out. I’m working in private firm as office assistant and don’t have much amount to pay these off as I lost my father I have also other responsibilities to meet.

 I have two young brothers who are studying and one eldest sister which are 27 now but we don’t have good money to get her married. I m so depressed and getting this pain on my nerves. I am also in the age to get married but still I can imagine coz I don’t have enough money. My mother wishes to get her children married so she can see us happy and organized.

I prayed a lot and have full faith in Christ that he will help me out and after praying is contacting you. Please pass this personal message to the concern person who can help me out. My uncle told me the one pastor named Pastor Dollar who intentionally helped out the people who stucked in credit cards. I don’t have email with me. I searched a lot for his email but all useless. I not only want prayers but also some financial help. So they can help me. I don’t need only prayers but also some help.

 I’m getting weak day by day and last week when I visited a doctor he said that my blood is getting less in body day by day...I’m taking some extreme tension. If I will not get any help now to get of this tension and depression I will die for sure.

 I cry a lot and also do fasting to get rid of these worries. If you will not help our family we will all die for sure... I didn’t use that money for my desires fulfillment. I used that for the completion of my mother’s medication and treatment. Now am badly stuck....There is only darkness in front of me and now I think that my heart beat will be stopped one day. I forgot to smile even. Though it’s the time of life which I have to enjoy.

 I have to complete these responsibilities...so I need serious help from yours... I will promise to let you know that what I wrote is completely true...trust me... I love my Jesus and you are his lovers as am ...I will wait for the favorable response. Please reply me back coz condolence also give courage and more than that I want to share this thing with someone who will be near to god.

I will be really grateful to the person who can just pay me the amount of 12000 USD. As i have to pay off these debt that i used for the completion of my mother's treatment and my siblings Studies.

In this struggle i can even marry. I didnt respond any proposal coz im so stuck, but i want my siblings to get married. We are all in great depression. if i will get this sum of money i will pay off  my debt otherwise bank will sue me nad with this embarrasment i will suicide for sure coz everything can come back but not respect if once lost.

If anybody out there can really want to get rewarded from god please help our family.
