Micro-Loans - US Government - Small Business Administration (SBA)

The MicroLoan Program provides very small loans to start-up, newly established, or growing small business concerns. Under this program, SBA makes funds available to nonprofit community based lenders (intermediaries) which, in turn, make loans to eligible borrowers in amounts up to a maximum of $35,000. The average loan size is about $10,500. Applications are submitted to the local intermediary and all credit decisions are made on the local level.

TERMS, INTEREST RATES AND FEES:

The maximum term allowed for a microloan is six years. However, loan terms vary according to the size of the loan, the planned use of funds, the requirements of the intermediary lender, and the needs of the small business borrower. Interest rates vary, depending upon the intermediary lender and costs to the intermediary from the U.S. Treasury.

COLLATERAL

Each intermediary lender has its own lending and credit requirements. However, business owners contemplating application for a microloan should be aware that intermediaries will generally require some type of collateral, and the personal guarantee of the business owner.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Each intermediary is required to provide business based training and technical assistance to its microborrowers. Individuals and small businesses applying for microloan financing may be required to fulfill training and/or planning requirements before a loan application is considered.

Small Business Grants and Loans

My husband and I would like to open a drive-through coffee shop/mini mart in the Bushkill, PA area.  The Northest PA area is very depressed, and after having been laid off almost one year ago, I am having difficulty finding a decent job in the area.  We believe that a a drive-through coffee shop/mini mart where customers can also buy cigarettes at the drive through could be a very lucrative business for us, particularly since we live in an area where a large volume of people commuting to and from work in NYC reside; these residents are on the road starting around 3:30 or 4:00 AM.  By offering a drive-through service where residents and commuters can stay in their vehicles, this business would be the only drive-through in the general area.  We would like any and all information about what grants and loans may be available to us, as well as information about how to start up a our dream business.

My name is Charity Strong. I am a working full time parent. I have six children and five grandchildren. I would like to own and operate my own business, a dollar store, offering merchandise from one dollar up to five dollars. I know that I can do this if I can figure out how to come up with the start up capital.

I have worked in the retail business for approximately 20 years. During that time I have done everything from stocking shelves to filing federal tax forms. I have learned ordering and merchandising from my own experience with what works. Having managed convience stores as well as dollar stores I am fully aware of what is involved in running and maintaining a retail business.

Comment: I am a mentally disabled older...
Note: This aidpage was started as a comment on "US Federal Government Grants, Scholarships, Loans, Free Services"

I am a mentally disabled older person over 50 years old living in rural Southwest Virginia (Wise County). I have work skills, but most are "rusty". I have a good education, but those skills are over 30 years old! I feel I need to upgrade my skills and would like to know if there are any suitable no obligation scholarships out there. All I want to do is to pursue an online certificate in some in-demand field. However, I don't have the finances. Any leads or advice will be appreciated!
