Stalking the Poor to Soothe the Affluent...

From today's New York Times editorial:

"Impoverished Americans are being set up as targets this week in Congress's desperate attempt to find budget cuts after four straight years of tax cuts for the affluent... The proposals would have the federal government - supposedly the protector of the neediest - give the states broad leeway to restrict current benefits; to require co-payments by the poor for medicine and for care by doctors and emergency rooms; and to cut preventive care for children, who represent half of the Medicaid roll. The food stamp program would probably also be hit with a $1 billion cut, and even welfare payments to elderly people who are sick would be crimped by using federal bookkeeping tricks."

"To Help a Family" - from The New York Times

"Dekiya Davis faces daunting challenges. She has cerebral palsy, she is partially paralyzed, and she is blind in one eye. She also suffers from schizoaffective disorder, which, through medication and therapy, she has under control. Her husband, Shawn Stewart, recently suffered a stroke. And Dekiya has another formidable responsibility: motherhood. Her ailments make it exceptionally difficult for her to care for her two young sons, Shawn Jr., 15 months, and Christopher, who is only a few weeks old. (Dekiya also has a 12-year-old daughter, Niema, who lives with her father’s mother.)

The Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service, one of the seven charities supported by The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund, helps parents like Dekiya care for their children and keep them from winding up in foster care. Five days a week, Yamile Angulo, who is a mother herself, comes to Dekiya’s home to prepare meals, bathe the children and take Shawn Jr. to day care.

Dekiya also receives public assistance and Social Security, but she could not afford supplies for the new baby, so the Brooklyn Bureau used Neediest Cases money to buy a crib, a stroller and clothing for Christopher."

Hi, My name is Jessica. My husband Mike and I just moved to missouri from Arizona because we could not afford to live there anymore and we thought we might have more opportunities for jobs here. We were wrong. We have had nothing but troubles since we have moved here. Let me begin, we moved into a rental property that we cannot afford, the management company told us that it was the only house in the entire springfield metro area (including cities up to 25 miles out) that would allow our older rottweiler who has medical problems. We made the sacrifice to take care of him and chanced not being able to afford the rent, which is a blazing $800 a month. We also did't have air conditioning for 3 weeks out of our first month, the rental company didn't want to fix it, until we threatened them with the Health Department. We expected to find jobs pretty soon. It took me seven weeks to get hired on at Wal-Mart making $7.00 an hour, and I have to beg them to give me full time hours, which they did. So I generally get (if I am lucky) between 34-37 hours a week. I work very hard, any hours available and volunteer to be called in if they need me to replace someone elses shift. Mike on the other hand, has not been able to find a job. He has applied everywhere possible (at least 4 applications a day to different places, some online, some face-to-face) It has now been 3 months and nothing. Well, one week he was not able to turn in applications, or go to intweviews, because one saturday night, we was attacked. Two large, drunk men, who we didn't even know attacked him and brutally assaulted him. The police came and a report was made, but the men were never found. This happened in a parking lot not but 5 minutes from our house. We had to go to the emergency room because he was seriously injured. They had managed to beat his head into the concrete pretty bad. He had fractures in his face, and whip-lash, and a pretty bad neck injury. He had a black eye and nerve damage to his face and neck. We had to go back to the emergency room about 4 days later because he didn't feel quite right, and the doctors told us that he had post concussion syndrome. His eyes had been dilating in and out quickly, and his blood pressure wasn't right, and his heart was beating strange. The total bill for the hospital, came to about $4000. We contacted Victims of Violent Crime Compensation of Missouri to see if they could help pay for some of the bills. They denied him, because they didn't catch the men? Not sure why. On top of that bill, he has to see a family practice doctor once a month for medications that run us about $400 each fill. She recommends either continuing the medication for a long time, or getting a surgery that has about a 33% success rate and costs between $80,000 and $100,000 to do. We have been delinquent on our bills several times, and have resulted to food stamp benefits, which we think should go for people that need it worse than us, like families with children, but we wouldn't eat if it wasnt for that help. We get less than $100 a month. We basically have lived on tuna sandwhiches and eggs. Once a week I try to fit in some ground beef and rice. We are falling harder and harder, and I feel like my body is about to give out. More than that, I am scared. We have no support system. No money, If anyone thinks that they can help us out with money to pay our bills, or to buy some food, or to help with the prescrpitions that would be great. Or, If you have a job availible in the Springfield, Mo metro area that would be good for Mike, let us know. He had an assosciated degree in computer related field and some experience with computer repair, installation, and such. But he doesnt have to do that. Keep in mind that his injury limits him physicially (meaning he cant lift 50 lbs continuously) though he is pretty strong. Thank you.

I am so tired. I have had such a horrible life, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I am 34 but I feel like I'm 94. I have been on Social Security Disability. I suffer from Major Depression, General Anxiety Disorder, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Anemia, Sleep Apnea, High Cholesterol, Diabetes Retinopathy, Infertility and Advance Periodontal disease. I had a stroke a year ago, the side effects are some stiffness in my thigh and short term memory loss. I've been told I will be completely blind in the next couple of years from the retinopathy. I know that things could be worse. I was told I will not receive additional benefits when it does happen. Social security isn't enough to even cover rent. I have recently gotten divorced and now I am being evicted by my ex husband. My parents are both deceased and I don't have any siblings. I did not know my Mother or her family, Both of my parents died when I was young. The only family members I do have are struggling themselves. I slept in my car three years ago, when I had no place to stay. I've applied for section 8 housing but I've been told since I don't have any children, the wait is three years. I can't afford to live anymore. I don't make enough money to qualify for low income housing. I am so sad and I keep getting the run around from agencies. I really need help. I hope there are some resources available to help me. Please email me if you know of anyone able to help.

Thank you!

Barbara

"Our only hope ls our children and olderfolk," Good God in heaven knows, the "powers that be" sure won't change their ways and help the backbone of america. Things went bad when we started moving Grandpa & Grandma out of the home into oldfolks homes. The kids lost precious teachings that are vital to life. The olderfolk lost their reason to be. All in the name of Bigger, better, faster and longer! We have a vast number of children lost in fostercare, on the street, and in broken homes. And with the great number of functioning olderfolk lets take some of the failing family farms and put them together? This is my idea. The children have not only lost the joys and lessons that Mom and Dad have no time to teach. But what is more, They don't learn how to be Human. Look around, We are in deep we must begin with our children so that when they are "The powers that be" they wil treat their familys with a bit more Humanness. One farm is all we need to start.   A. looking for employment

My husband died unexpectedly, he did not have life insurance or health insurance, he was never ill. Two months later, I lost my job. The next day, I filed for unemployment and registered with the TWC for help to find a job. I received unemployment until August. I applied for every job that I qualified for in the TWC listings, there were many, I only got a few interviews. I am not sure that the job postings were up to date, so many of them sent me responses that the jobs were closed. Some jobs were posted a day or two before they were to be closed. I have sent out so many cover letters with resumes and applications. I have checked with my references, no one has contacted them. I feel like I've been sending out paper airplanes into empty space.  Many of the applications have gone to State agencies which list job vacancies.

I am diabetic and am out of my medications, I was on the Aim Low program in my county, in August they sent a letter about changes, I called to be rescreened (first screened in May) and was told to call back later, this is what happens each time I call, I am clearly qualified. Initally, in May, I applied to several of the prescription assistance programs and was approved, they were sent to the Aim Low pharmacy. I found out by accident that they had arrived and had been there a month without my being contacted. I finally received them but have received none since and have not been able to see a nurse/dr for refill prescriptions. I don't know where to turn as my diabetes cannot be ignored. I am following what I've been taught in managing my diabetes, but that is not enough without the meds I was prescribed by my doctor while I was still working and had insurance. I have lost alot of weight (40#) and my blood pressure has dropped to a much lower rate than it has been in more than 20 years. I think those factors have helped me with the diabetes complications.

I receive a survivor's benefit from social security, but it is only enough to pay my rent with $34. left over, I am behind on my utilities and must seek help to get reconnected, often. My car engine light blinks constantly and it runs "rough" needs spark plugs changed and maintenance work, so my gas mileage is poor. On the weekends I set up with an art group to sell note cards that I paint, and some jewelry that make with left over supplies from better times while my husband was alive and we were both earning. I sell a little, usually enough to pay my booth fee and gas money and a little extra used for food during the week. My back, arms and hands are beginning to be stiff from the loading and unloading each week. My hands ache for days and swell. I don't have medication for that. Last week my allergy to smoke flared up and I have had nerve pain in my jaw, ear and head that is almost unbearable.

I have a daughter about 20 miles away who ignores me since I asked her to keep my dog, a Lab named Lizzi for 3 days so I could go to help my younger daughter who was having a myelogram to determine therapy for an injury she is still suffering from that was not initally treated properly. She has alot of pain from her injury and is in physical therapy, that is not covered by her insurance. She works, but the therapy is very costly and she does not have money to help me with. My older daughter works and has a partner, who also works, but requires alot of her attention and 3 adopted children.  They do not communicate with me since I asked them to keep Lizzi for those 3 days. They have 2 dogs and 4 cats and a big fenced yard. Several years ago, when they were living in a condo, they dumped Lizzi with us when they didn't have a yard. Lizzi is very well trained and is always on a leash with me. the vet told us she was traumatized and that she should not ever have to stay in a crate, for any length of time. She loves them and is always so happy to be with them and gets along with their dogs and cats. I am sad that my older daughter seems lost to me. I am so alone. I do have kind neighbors, but to have family that is so close, but distant, is sad. I try not to think about my older daughter, hoping that she will call are show up someday. My younger daughter cannot make trips to visit often as her injury makes a 3 hour drive each way, something very painful to do, and not miss work when she gets back.  I need help and suggestions of how to move ahead, I am not old enough to retire at 62. I have alot of energy to give, just not enough money to make ends meet. I guess I really need caring attention, most of all.

I am a disabled vietnam era veteran. About two years ago I suffered and saw first hand the obstacles that people and families in need go thru when they are struck with an unforeseen incident. The world can turn into a cruel and cold and lonely place. It seems that the only visitors that approach you are people that want to take their pound of flesh. All the collectors come to collect their debts and there is no way of holding them off. Sometimes families are forced to make harsh and rash decisions just in order to survive the tradegy.

I do not want anyone to feel the way that I did when I had my strokes. Dealing with the feeling of complete loss and disarry of your life only compounds itself on your situation. It harms both you and the family around you in so many ways. The emotional, physical and financial strain can become unbearable. Along with the illness and long sleepless nights you are also plagued with the ever approaching feeling of doom. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO SURVIVE!!!

I was able to first hand experience this and to speak with others that have gone through these incidents also. There are a few basic needs that must be met in order to get through this crisis safely and remain in a stable environment.

Basic needs include but are certainly NOT limited to:

Food / Shelter / Medical Care

Knowing that someone cares and that there are people who can or want to help, makes a big difference in bridging the gap to becoming healthy and viable again.

What I have decided to do and wish to attempt to pass on to people are both the basic needs and the knowledge that there are others that care and sympathize with people in need.

I hope to help bridge the gap between the needs and the needy!

I am starting a non-profit organization to help veterans and their families cope with the difficult and rocky time between receiving either their benfits or their pension. I wish to exted this service also to the homeless in need.

I need help to get this venture started. Any help from you would help out the cause greatly!!!  One of the things that we need too do is purchase wholesale/discount/surplus items to raise  funds for the cause.
We can't do this without you and there are people waiting to be helped. Please help us bridge the gap between the needed and needy.

I want to be an organization that ACTUALLY helps, not just a name that people are turned away from when they are in need.

I lost my job and have been denied unemployment. I have a house payment and an electric bill and gas bill past due, almost $900 combined. I have had interviews, but I'm being threatened with foreclosure and eletricity disconnection. I have a 21 month old baby girl and don't know what to do. Does anyone know of a organization I can go to for help. I only need help for this months bills, and I'm sure I'll have employment before I have to pay next months.

ANYWAY I AM AN AWESOME PERSON,  I JUST HAVE HAD A FEW BAD LUCK PATHS IN LIFE SO FAR, LIFE IS WONDERFUL BUT IT'S FULL OF QUICK UTURNS, AND STOPS AND GO AND STRANGE WALKS OF LIFE FORSURE, BUT IN MY LIFE I SEEN TO HAVE MET SOME PRETTY COOL INTELLIGENT PEOPLE , ONE THING FORSURE IS I HAVE NEVER EVER BEEN EVEN CLOSE TO BEING OUT ON THE STREETS OR ETC.... I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A NICE WARM COMFY ROOM AND PLENTY OF THINGS SHOWERD OVER ME, MATERIAL ITEMS, MY BOYFRINED OF 3 YEARS IS DECEASED OF MAY 31ST MEMORAL DAY 04 THIS IS THE 4TH YEAR HE HAS BEEN OUT OF MY LIFE, I WOKE UP TO HIM DEAD ON MEMORIAL DAY OF 04 FROM A DIABETIC COMPLICATED HEART ATTACK.  I REALLY HAD A SUPER HARD TIME WITH THAT AND I HAVE BEEN IN THERAPY AND ON CERTAIN DEPRESSANT MEDICATION TO HELP, WELL IT HAS BEEN OVER 2 YEARS NOW THAT I FEEL MUCH BETTER AND THANKS TO GOD, HE HAS BEEN GUIDING ME IN GOOD DIRECTIONS, LIKE WHEN I FOUND THIS SITE, THIS WAS GREAT.  i AM A VERY FUN LOVING WOMAN/GIRL AND VERY INTELLIGENT.  HEY I ONLY  HAVE MY GED AND SOME LITTLE TECHNICAL TRAINING, BUT I CAN DO JUST ABOUT ANY THING THAT IS OUT THERE, RIGHT NOW THOUGH I AM IN NO SHAPE TO WORK, AND MAYBE AFTER I AM ON DISABILITY FOR A FEW YEARS AND GET BACK ON MY FEET AGAIN TO WHERE MY BRAIN IS UN CLOUDED AND I CAN FOCUS AGAIN? IF THAT EVER HAPPENS, THEN MAYBE I CAN GET BACK TO A CAREER, BUT I WORKED IN THE MEDICAL CAREER, HADLING BILLINGS AND COLLECTIONS, AND YOU REALLY HAVE TO HAVE IT TOGETHER TO DO THAT, THE DOCTORS DO NOT CARE WHO U ARE OR WHERE YOU ARE, IF YOUR AT YOUR DESK AND IT'S CLOSE TO WHERE PATIENTS CAN BE SEEN OR EVEN TALKING TO A PATIENT ABOUT A DEDUCTIBLE, ETC IF YOU DID SOMETHING THEY FELT WRONG, OR EVEN LOOKED AT THEM DIFFERENT THAN NORMAL THEY WILL "YELL" AND MAKE A TOTAL SCENE TO TRY TO MAKE "US" THE TAKERS FEEL LIKE DONKEY ASSES, WELL WHEN THEY ATTEMPT THAT ONE ON ME I HAVE ALWAYS WENT STRAIGHT TO WHERE MY PURSE AND SWEATER/JACKET WAS AND PICKED UP MY BOOKS AND STUFF FROM MY DESK AREA AND WALKED BACK TO THEIR OFFICE AND IF THEY WERN'T IN AND WITH A PATIENT, I WOULD JUST CALL THEM AND SAY THAT IT DIDN'T WORK OUT, NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO TALK TO ME LIKE I AM SOME KIND OF ANIMAL.  I DON'T EMBARRASS EASILY BUT THE PATIENTS WHO LOOK AT THEM LIKE WOW WHEN THEY ARE ACTING THIS WAY DO NOT DESERVE TO SEE THAT, ANYWAY I HAVE WORKED FOR 4 DIFFERENT DOCTORS AND ONE ONLY ONE I HAD TO WALK OUT ON LIKE THAT, NEVER MAKING A SCENE JUST OUT, AND THE OTHER 3 WELL, THEY TREATED ME WITH THE UPMOST RESPECT BECAUSE I DO HAVE AN AWESOME JOB PERFORMACE DETAIL, AND I AM FUNNY AND PROFESSIONAL ALL AT THE SAME TIME, SO CANNOT DISS THAT CAN YA? ALWAYS FISHING AND A FEW COOLERS FULL OF BOTTLED BUDWEISER , HE REFUSED CANS, I AM A LADY ANGLER AND WON A FEW DOLPHIN (MAHI MAHI TO THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW THEIR FISHING) MY BIGGES WAS A 78POUNDER, BULL TOO.  I HAVE ALSO CAUGHT A NICE 90LB MARLIN.  ANYWAY ILOVED TO GO FISHING IN OUR BOAT, IT WAS SO FUN, AND RELIEVED A WORK WEEK OF STREES, BUT SO IT GOES, WE DIVORCED IN 02 AFTER ABOUT 12 YEARS OF DATING AND MARRIAGE IT WAS ENOUGH, HE PAMPERED ME WITH TONS OF CARS, TRUCKS AND EVERYTHING, I HAD A TON OF CLOTHES, SHOES, JEWLERY , EVERYTHING A WOMAN CAN OR WOULD WANT AND 110% TRUST, I COULD TAKE MY BEST BUDDY DOWN TO KEY WEST EVERY YEAR AND PAY FOR ALL THE EXPENSES AND STAY FOR 9 NIGHTS 10 FULL DAYS, TAKE VACATIONS OUT TO CALIFONRIA TO VISIT MY FRIENDS IN SAN DIEGO,  I LIVED IN OCEANSIDE, CARLSBAD AND IMPERIAL BEACH FROM A CHILD TO ABOUT 20 YEARS OLD, MOVED TO FLORIDA (FORTLAUDERDALE/HOLLYWOOD) AFTER MEETING MY X HUBBY ON A SURF TRIP HERE IN CALIFORNIA (SAN DIEGO) I MISS THE OCEAN, I LOVE THE OCEAN, BUT I LOVE DESERTS, I LOVE MOUNTAINS AND I LOVE LAKES AND ANYTHING I AM EASY TO PLEASE AND A PLEASURE TO LIVE WITH AND FUN TO BE WITH AND JUST RELAXING TOO.  I KNOW HOW TO STAY TO MY OWN BUSINESS, UNLESS SOMEONE WANTS ME INVOLVED I LOVE A MAN WHO HAS TOTAL THE UPMOST RESPECT FOR THEIR MOTHERS (HAPPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL OUT THERE!!  I NEVER COULD HAVE A BABY, BUT HECK IF A SINGLE FATHER IS READING THIS AND YOU WOULD LIKE A PARTNER OR A BUDDY TO HELP IN RAISING OR SCHOOLWORK, I WOULD TAKE A ROOM FOR CLEANING AND COOKING, SITTING, ETC... my name is harriet key I'm a foster care parent and i presently live in a studio apartment and i would like to be able to provide a home for a sibling group of children that desperately need a home and family. In order for me to be able to provide them a stable life i need money to buy or rent a home or even if some one has a house they would donate to help my cause. The amount of money needed for a rental would be base on the rent times 3 that would be one months rent one months security, and one months brokers commission. If there is anyone that can help my cause or give me information that could help me i would greatly appreciate it very much.
