The Orphans of Romania Need Your Help!
URGENTLY NEEDED HELP FOR A CRITICAL CHILDREN'S   PROJECT

We are a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization dedicated to improve the life condition of Romanian orphans and street children, including the assistance for Pediatric Hospitals and Orphanages. Romania is a poor Country. The Romanian Government has no sufficient funds to care for orphanages and orphans to provide them with food clothing and medical care. Many children suffer from Aids, Hepatitis and malnutrition, which is the worst thing of all. Malnutrition is the cause why most children will develop mental disabilities including mental retardation. Our organization is helping these children. Our board members who visited some of the orphanages, and pediatric hospitals noted that medical personnel they talked to, complained about the lack of medical equipment for physical therapy in Romanian orphanages. Even though we have been blessed with numerous in kind contributions, what we greatly need is cash assistance to repair appliances in Orphanages, send medical equipment, medicines, vitamins, and other much needed things. Other items needed range from diapers to ventilation therapeutic equipment. What we take for granted such as baby powder, cereal, baby food and blankets, these children are in desperate need for. We appeal to the American Public to help us raise funds to supply these children with things they need ,and to help them to have a future in Romania. Thank you, and God bless you! You can donate by either sending a contribution directly to our address below or visiting our web site at:  http://www.operationhelpchildren.org/

"In association with a Russian Foundation OAI is working to see a project start in Kostroma Russia before the conclusion of 2006. We have been building relationship with a Russian team for nearly 2 years and are confident in the work they are doing. Particularly with children from very disadvantaged backgrounds and alcoholic families. We are currently working on the housing of the project and hope to announce something very soon. We have begun to gather sponsors for this."

Thinking about having a child?

I read a post earlier about the
Romanian orphans and I started to think: what about the American orphans? How many children are there in the foster care system right now? It took some digging and what I found astounded me! Before you have another child or think about adopting from outside the US look at the statistics below.

All the information below has been derived from :
The US Department of Health and Human Services - Administration for Children and Families

Children in foster care on 9/30/02 :
  •  533,000
Average age:
  •  10.2
average length of time in foster care:
  • 18.1 months = @ 1 1/2 yrs
most common race/ethnicity:
  • Black/non-hispanic - 37% - 195,425
  • White/non-hispanic -  39% - 205,769
Gender :
  • male: 52%
  • female: 48%

Other items of interest:
  • During  2005, an estimated 1,460 children (not in foster care)  (compared to 1,490 children for FFY 2004) died from abuse or neglect.   link
  • Three-quarters (76.6%) of child fatalities were caused by one or more parents
  • Some children who died from maltreatment were already known to CPS agencies.
In 1995, only 487,000 women, out of 10 million, had ever completed an adoption

Granted this information is very outdated, but I think you get the idea. People see the headlines everyday about overseas adoptions by celebrities. What about OUR CHILDREN HERE, IN THE US? Doesn't anyone care about them?

community Life
Here since: Apr 27, 2008
Female, 45
Director
Kampala
Languages: English, Lwo, Kiswahili, Luganda

Life in Africa Kireka and Gulu are community based organisations that have evolved from the Life in Africa foundation which began in 1999. They mainly work with the communities of people who have been displaced by the northern Ugandan war that has raged for the last 21 years or so.

In addition to building sustainable community based programs, Life in Africa is committed to building sustainable people.

Education, global citizenship, income generation and planning, and creative psycho-social uplift are cross-cutting themes in all of Life in Africa's new community-designed programs for 2008.  Our hope is to witness empowerment and create opportunity where the communities have told us they need it most. Our WE approach involves activities for the whole family - especially women, but also welcoming the children, youth and men who are dependent on them.

  • Internet4Change coordinates peer and volunteer verification of Life in Africa program activities, and online reporting about the impact of micro-loans, craft sales and school fees assistance on the lives of Life in Africa members.
  • MicroSuccess offers more than just a loan, with innovative savings programs and micro-financing products designed to help Life in Africa's members plan for long term family financial security.

  • LiA 4 Kids provides nutrition programs, global community connections, club activities, and special life experiences for Life in Africa member children, and provides school fees assistance for dependant orphans in our member families.

  • Adult Life encourages adult members of Life in Africa to develop their talents, through music dance and drama, and training from global and local volunteers in literacy, numeracy, english, and household management issues.

  • LiA CAN! is Life in Africa's Cooperative Artisan's Network, offering group craft skills development and production opportunities to Life in Africa's members. These products are now being sold to help the community finance programs that impact other areas of members' lives.

Aidpage group discussing "orphans"...

Feel free to participate in this public group space.

Two easy ways to do this:

  1. Add a comment or a question here - on this page... or on any other page in this space.
  2. Or, if you want to start a separate thread - make a new page.

Either way is good - the important thing is your participation. On Aidpage, people support each other by speaking out and by paying attention to each other - as simple as that.
