Single Mother With Children's Birthdays Coming Soon

Hi all,

I'm not sure how this page works, but I found this by searching online because I am extremely desperate at the moment. I am a single mother of two beautiful daughters, age 3 & 8 (soon to be 9 & 4) in the next couple of months. I am a full time student, so right now I have no time to work. I am completely broke being a student. Federal funds only pay me $292 a month. I am about to lose my home, I just got the first decent running car of my life & someone wrecked it while it was parked on the street. Ugh, liability insurance of course so no way to fix my car. My daughters' birthdays are August 8th & September 8th. School is coming up and my oldest will be in 3rd grade (I can't believe she's growing so fast) and my baby will be starting Head Start (I'm going to miss her). I have no money for the birthdays, school supplies, to fix my car, for bills, I can't remember the last time I bought anything for myself. I just want my daughters to have a decent birthday, decent school clothes and supplies, and I want to catch up on my bills, and fix my car. I hate asking for money, it can be so degrading sometimes as a single parent. You want to provide a certain life for your kids and just cannot sometimes. Very hard to swallow as a parent of any kind I'm sure. The amount I'm asking for may seem large, but compared to what needs to be taken care of soon on my end, I won't have any left over for pleasure. Anything will help though, absolutely any amount at this point. I'm not sure how this site works, but I'm so glad I found it, and thank you so much in advance if anyone wants to lend a helping hand to me and my children. I will be forever grateful! Have a blessed day everyone, and good luck to everyone else on this page that is seeking help. I know how hard it is to even ask.

The amount I have come up with to help fix my car, my daughters' birthdays, bills, and school clothes/supplies is (embarrassed to type it) $7,000. I hate to put down that amount because it looks HUGE on here, but trust me, it will all be used for necessities. Thank you again so much.

ATTENTION PARENTS - BEFORE YOU BUY SCHOOL SUPPLIES - READ THIS!
This is specifically for NYS residents - however, as I -or others - find additional states, they will be listed as well. I encourage each of you to check with or contact your state department of education.

There has been a lot of controversy lately about the cost of school supplies, what constitutes as necessary supplies, etc. Many parents cannot afford the extensive lists  that are required by teachers when returning back to school this year - or any other for that matter. The main concern has been the $100+ calculators for students.

WGRZ has been following the story which has both parents and teachers up in arms. Being a single parent myself, I struggle, like many of you, when it comes to back to school time. The cost of these calculators is outrageous but it is NOT REQUIRED by the state. One person has posted the link to the state department of education where it states:

"Supplies are defined as something which is consumed in use, loses its appearance and shape in use, is expendable, and is inexpensive Examples include pencils, pens, paper, etc.  Calculators do not fall into this category and must be considered like classroom teaching materials for which school districts are authorized to levy a tax."

No where does it state that tissues, hand sanitizers, multi-colored folders, specific binders,  or the multitude of other unnecessary items that teachers "REQUIRE" . The next time a teacher complains your child is not prepared, give them a copy of this letter. Pass it along to your friends as well. If anyone has links to other states, please post them as well.

I spoke to my daughter about the situation. She told me they (sometimes) have enough calculators to go around for the class, but if you need one for homework, you have to stay afterschool. I know this is not always possible so I have found some FREE , ONLINE graphing calculators in case they are needed.

Help Desprately Needed!

Wow, ok here goes. My husband was injured in an automobile accident June of 2006. He has been off work since then.

We have two boys, 14 and 18. Our 18 year old is college bound, with help from relitives to co-sign on school loans as we (his parents) have not been able to qualify due to our home being forclosed on this last May.

There is no income coming in for my husband at all. With no hopes of anything in the furture. We have applied for SS but have been turned down due three times.

I am dontating a kidney to my Uncle whom is very ill and desperately needs this to live.

I began a new job 2 weeks ago, and am having trouble catching back up on the bills.

What we need is assistance with rent, and household bills that we are behind on and current ones. School necessitys for our boys. A round trip ticket to Denver from Missouri. Financial help through the surgery due to me having to be off and not having vacation or paid days off.

Need school supplies?

This is the time of year when parents are scrambling for school supplies. With the rising costs, more and more parents are finding it difficult to get kids what they need to start the year off right. Struggling after accident

My husband was in a car accident and injured his back in March.  He had back surgery and even after months of physical therapy is not able to go back to work because of the pain & numbness.  We have no disability insurance so we have no income coming in except a part time job I have taken.

We have two wonderful children (boy 9 and girl 14) who desperately need school clothes & school supplies and there is just no way we can afford it. They are both good students and nice, helpful kids and I know they would be very thankful for any help you can give.

Below Is A letter about who we are and what we are doing thank you my name is Corey and you Can Call me At 504-609-5750 or 504-588-9318 for more info. God Bless You And Your Work !!! St. Anna’s Episcopal Church 1313 Esplanade Ave. New Orleans, LA 70116 504.947.2121 August 27, 2007 To Whom it may Concern: Once again we are approaching the start of the school year. This year St. Anna’s Episcopal Church has begun an experimental program called “St. Anna’s Youth Initiative.” Our mission is seeking donations of school supplies, uniforms, books, calculators, tutoring devices, etc. To distribute to needy young students. In addition to educating students, the program aims to get young teens off the streets and into positive church youth programs and community activities. This program is funded largely by the Diocese of Louisiana. With the cooperation of Sylvan Learning Centers, St. Anna’s has arranged to have these children tutored in an accelerated program aimed at bringing them up to grade level. Many families within our community lack the financial ability to obtain these crucial school items. But you can help by either donating materials or funds to support this program. Thank you for you time and consideration. Without your support “St. Anna’s Youth Initiative” would not be possible. Please call at 504-609 5750 . Best regards, St. Anna’s Youth Initiative

re: your husband:
you said he was injured due to an accident. I can only assume that his doctor bills were covered by no-fault or the other driver's insurance - if he was not at fault, was he compensated for lost time due to the accident? If not, WHY not? Is there a case pending? Was this while he was @ work? is it comp related? Is he collecting Unemployment? compensation? If he has applied for SSD and been denied - talk to an atty - most will have a first consultation for free and will work on a contingency basis( they will NOT get paid until you collect) . You might ( not always) have a better chance of getting SSD with an atty representing you. These questions don't require answers, these are just possibilities that you might want to look into if you haven't already.

Kids: with one income, you son should be eligible for state aid. check the link below - also check the school he is applying to for additional assistance. Explain your situation to them and see what they can do for you. Worst case scenario: He may have to attend a community college the first 2 years. HOWEVER the benefit is, it is much cheaper and he can get his required courses out of the way and may be able to get his books and supplies paid for without any additional expense - just make sure the credits are transferable to his college of choice.

I would also suggest social services, catholic charities, st vincent de paul, community action organization, united way. talk to them - explain your situation tell them what you need: rent, food, utilities, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, etc. - All links are on my national organizations page

as for your uncle: ESRD is a covered medicare/medicaid service - so he is covered - or should be. I am including a link that may be able to help with this particular situation - Good luck! Keep me posted.
