The Metro Deaf School promotes academic excellence in deaf education using an innovative bilingual & bicultural approch.  Our primary purpose is to help our students develop a sense of identity and pride as deaf persons while providing them skills and knowledge to succeed in the larger hearing community.

Metro Deaf School (MDS) was approved as one of the nation's first charter schools in August 1992 and celebrated twelve years as a charter school in fall 2004. The school opened for operation in the fall of 1993 with thirteen deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) students in kindergarten through eighth grade.  It added a pre-school in fall 1998. In fall 2004, there were five pre-school students and 68 students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade. 

MDS has the same academic expectations and curriculum as any other K-8 program - regardless of the learner.  The focus is on student achievement and self-advocacy, as in any program but it happens that MDS' student body is deaf.  Deafness does not diminish the expectations or academic rigor.  MDS is 100% "special education" and while they do serve numerous students who have "special needs," thus offering those students modified and accommodated curriculum to meet their unique needs, the rest of the student body is instructed with a "regular education" approach.  College and/or post secondary education of some form is a frequent discussion and a common expectation as the students go through middle school at MDS.  Students learn how to be successful in the larger community and how to be positive self-advocates as deaf individuals. Students and families see the potential in themselves and their children.  Learning is maximized and expectations are high since the world needs deaf leaders in all fields.  Based on alumni data, an astounding 90% of all former MDS graduates have attended or are attending a 4-year college with the other 10% in other Post Secondary Option (PSO) programs.

MDS serves D/HH students from the seven county metro area as well as western Wisconsin.  Currently, MDS is serving 30 school districts and has a steady enrollment of approximately 68-75 students annually.  This enrollment number is considered "above average" when compared to other D/HH programs such as Como Elementary in St. Paul, Gideon Pond in Eagan and Anne Sullivan in Minneapolis.  For the 2004-2005 school year, 53% of students are from hearing families and 47% are from deaf families. D/HH students are considered a "low-incidence disability" group. There are approximately 1,200 D/HH students in Pre-K - 12th grade in the Twin Cities.  Typically, districts bus D/HH students to "center schools" where a population can be created to provide students with classroom peers.   Many hard of hearing students remain in their own school districts and are mainstreamed into regular classes, some with and others without support. Our families/students choose a different approach to education based on their child's learning preference.

I started working the day after I graduated from high school in 1975 and have worked continuously for the past 30 years.  I am currently struggling to support my family on public assistance.  While I was working full time and raising my two children, I went to school at night to obtain an AS Degree in Business from El Camino Community College.  Although a major accomplishment in my life, my AS Degree did little to advance my career.  My current goal is to go back to college to earn a Bachelor's Degree with a focus in the IT area or to attend a private school that would prepare me to study for and obtain IT industry certifications, such as A+, MCP, MOUS, MCSE, etc.  My objective is to find personally fulfilling employment that will not detract from my efforts to raise a family.  Time is of the essence as it pertains to my educational goals.  I'm looking for funding, books, school supplies, computer, clothing, etc., that will help me achieve these goals while supporting my children.

I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for many years and I still believe that the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most beautiful places in the world, especially San Francisco since I was born here. I am a single mom of 20, go to school full time and work full time.  My mommy watches my child but my mother is going back to school soon and cannot watch him any longer.  She also lets us live with her and drives us to where we need to be.  My step-dad supports all of us.  I am tired of mouching off my family when they cannot afford to raise my child as well as their five.  I need transportation, help with paying childcare, and general assistance.  I just want a little help to get me through school while supporting my child so that I can have a career enabling me to successfully support the both of us.

Hey  !! My name is Crystal Coleman I am 20 yrs old and I have two twin boys that are Five months old and their names are Trevor & Leland . They are my Life. . To start off. Evey since I was little I was always in a family that did drugs and stayed in trouble I never knew my mom very well because she was in and out of jail, and I finally met my real dad when I turned 18YRS.I grew up with two brothers one is in jail now and has been in jail since he was 16. My little brother in in high school now and it is his senior year. When i was little i was sexual molested by my Uncle.. I felt that i could not tell anyone but when i did i told my Grandparents because they were the one we called mom and dad . When i told them they didnt belive me so the sent me off to live with my aunt here in Texas.. When i moved here i was treated like crap i had to go to school, cook dinner , wash dishes , wash clothes, clean my aunts room and rub her feet in the middle of a a school night . Her thought on school was that it came after what she wanted me to do for her! I belived in school first .. Anyways I finally ran away from her house at the age of 17 , from their i lived from house to house, and went to school. Thats when i met my husband , I fell in love i thought he was the real thing so we got married Oct 28, 2006 , but little did i know that when I said i do i would be put threw Physicaly and Emotional abuse. ( I got married at 18) I just put up with the abuse because i had no family to run to ... When i got married i was still in High School my husband didnt want me to go to school because he thought i would flirt with the boys , and he didnt want me to go on any school trips for all the same reasons.. Well thats when it all strarted the first time he just punched me in the face once and called me many names but I belived that he loved me so I didnt want to leave him.. But i did and when I had no were to turn to or no one to turn to I went back to him ... and the abuse got worse i had just had my gawbladder taken out when he decided to beat me the second time i was on the couch he decided that he wanted me to go to bed with him and i told him i was not ready for bed that i would be in the room in a min , well he didnt like that he followed me to the bath room and beat me in the shower , when he was beating me I went into an asthma attack and and refused to give me my medication. I left him that time for the second time. But as you might know already i went back because i felt in love and i felt that I couldn't live with out him. The third time he beat me he stopped in the middle of the high way and was yelling at me i told him to get out and let me drive because he was driving crazy because a EMS worker waved at me , when he got out of his little blue GMC truck i slidded over to the drivers side and as i was reaching for the door my husband grabed the door and slamed my head and arm in it many times and left me on the side of the road . This time i was determined i was not going back to him my aunt let me move in and while i was at school she also let him move in felt traped so i was with him again.. The Last time he beat me i was pregnate My friend was going to throw a graduation party for me because i had grauated well i was maken glasses for my party that said Senior Class Of 2007 and in the middle of maken a glass my husband asked me a question I didnt understand him so i asked him what he said and he started beating me, little did i know i was pregnant he held me in a conner and beat me and when i tryied to call the cops he took the phone and beat me more and the tore the house phone out of the wall and called his step mom and told her not to let me use the phone... I got out and when i did i went to the hospital and i found out i was pregnant 2 weeks later i was so excited but when i went to the hospital i found out that i was suspost to have triplets but when my husband beat me i lost a child. I was so upset with him, i couldnt figure out why he would beat me so much and just think everything was ok. I stayed away from my husband for 4 months and then i decided i was going to give him one more chance and this time it was not for me it was for the kids.. Well i didnt go threw physical abuse this time it was all emotional abuse this last time and i ended up having my babys earily because of all of stress and stuff he made me do , When i had the kids i thought it would change my kids lived in the hospital for 35 days after they were born i never got to touch my babys when they were born just a little while after they were in the hospital. They had so many cords on them because i had them 2 months earily. I went everyday to see my babys and my husband started getting jelious so i told him he better fix his act because if he didnt that the kids and i was leavin because we didnt have to put up with his crap. When the babys got out it was getting worse he didnt want me to have anything to do with my kids, and remember me telling you that my kids are my world well my kids gave me the strength to leave him for good , I went to a Family Abuse Center for a week now im living with a friend and i am getting a divorce. Every now and then I think mabey I should just go back because it might be easyier to just live with him because I have no car , no money and no house, but you know what  I refuse to go back to him when im breaking down and thinking about going back I listen to music . I Call this a Lesson Learned, and hold my two wonderful boys . Because it was a lesson Learned . I learned the hard way , but alway turn to god even when no one eles is their he is!! God knows what i went threw and he will take care of it at the end!!

We are a low income family looking for assistane to help us make it! Ok let me get a little bit more into detail on how we need help. My husband is a Iraqi veteran he is 27 yrs old and is now disabled he was injured in iraq, and when he came home was discharged from the military. I am unable to work out of the home due to this and our 3 children. We live in government housing and would really like to have our own home. please any info possible would be great!

Hi we are the West family my husband was in a car accident that removed him from work and haulted our primary form of income we are past due with our rent, and soon to be put out of our apartment. We have a 2year old son and we cant lose him because of this. we recently took my husband's sister and brother in our household, they were living in California and there father had a mental issue and put them out on the streets with nowhere to go. So we had to send for them to come live with us. My brother in law is eighteen years of age and my sister in law is seventeen years old. Today marks a week overdue in rent and were at a loss, we dont know what to do. I have called the local places that's supposed to help with situations like this, and their mostly out of funds for the rest of the month or taking care of other bills at the time. Weve ran out of choices and this would be our last resort, all of us are in dying need of your help please help us pay our rent. The rent is $855.00 and the first day it went up $50.00 and every day after that was $15.00. We will be absolutely grateful if an angel was sent to help us, we desperately need some help.

I am a single black 46 year old female.  I have no children.  I lost my job in 2005.  I was unemployed for six months.  In August I lost my house and my car was repossed in December 2006.  I am currently working and I only make $8.25 an hour.  Since I have been without a car my 65 year old mother provide transportation to work everyday and I think God for her.  She recently found out she was a dieabetic and have to go to the doctor constantly.  With everything that I have been through, if it wasn't for her I would have been dead a long time ago. Since all of this has occured, most of my family treat me like I have the plague. I have noone whom I can even talk to.  Noone seem to understand.  I don't drink or do drugs. I just lost my good paying job and now I have almost lost everything.  It is so bad that if someone garnished my pay I would not be able to go on.  I don't answer my phone because of the bill collectors calling.  I am stressed all the time.  I would like any financial help to help me file bankruptcy so that I can get back on my feet.   I am a hard worker, and I have been working since I was 17 years old.   I never depended on a having a man in my life to help pay bills and I am not gay. Sometimes I feel that God has forsaken me.  For the lfe of me I don't know what I've done wrong.   I have never hurt or taken advantage of anybody.   I can't get any help from from any assistance programs because I don't have  any children.  Please somebody help me! I don't think I can take much more of this.  I  just want my life back.  If anyone can give me suggestions, financial help as to what my next step should be as far as how to obtain a car, file bankruptcy, get help with utilities, and food ect.  It would be greatly appreciated.
